COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT AERIAL HOOP

What is aerial hoop (lyra)?

Aerial hoop, also known as Lyra, is an aerial art that uses a suspended metal hoop to perform poses, spins, transitions, and flowing movements in the air. It combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and fitness to create a fun and unique way to build strength, confidence, and body awareness.

Is aerial hoop hard for beginners?

Aerial hoop can be challenging at first, but beginners are welcome! Our classes are designed to help you learn the fundamentals step-by-step while building the strength, coordination, and confidence needed to progress. You don’t need any prior aerial experience to get started.

Do I need to be strong to start aerial hoop?

No! You do not need to be strong before taking your first aerial hoop class. Many students begin with little upper body strength and develop it naturally through consistent practice. Our instructors provide progressions so you can safely build strength as you learn.

What should I wear to aerial hoop class?

Wear comfortable, fitted athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. Leggings, fitted tops, and clothing that covers your skin are usually best for aerial hoop since exposed skin can sometimes make certain movements more challenging or uncomfortable. Avoid loose clothing, jewelry, watches and zippers.

Is aerial hoop a good workout?

Yes! Aerial hoop is a full-body workout that helps improve upper body strength, core strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and endurance. Many students love that it feels more like learning a skill than a traditional workout.

Does aerial hoop hurt?

Aerial hoop may feel challenging when you are first learning because your body is getting used to new movements and pressure points. Some students experience temporary soreness or mild bruising while they adjust, but proper technique and consistent practice help your body adapt.

How long does it take to learn aerial hoop?

Everyone progresses at a different pace, but many beginners can learn basic mounts, poses, and beginner tricks within their first few classes. With consistent attendance, students continue building strength and learning more advanced skills over time.

Can I take aerial hoop if I'm not flexible?

Absolutely! Flexibility is not required to start aerial hoop. Many students begin with limited flexibility and improve through regular practice. Our classes include movements and progressions that help you safely increase your flexibility over time.

Am I too old to start aerial hoop?

No! Aerial hoop is for adults of many ages and fitness levels. You are never too old to try something new, challenge yourself, and learn a fun new skill. Many students discover aerial arts later in life and love the confidence it brings.

What can I expect during my first aerial hoop class?

When you arrive, you'll check in at the front desk and finish registering. Then you'll find a spot in the aerial room, Bliss. Your first aerial hoop class will include a warm-up, an introduction to the equipment, basic techniques, and beginner-friendly movements. Your instructor will guide you through each step while helping you learn proper form, safety, and foundational skills.
